Item NumberPHOTO005/385-031Datec2020TitleTūrama ConstructionDescriptionOfficially opened in 2021 with a dawn blessing, Tūrama is Kristin’s award-winning indoor sports facility. The Māori name Tūrama, meaning ‘Stand tall and shine,’ was inspired by the building's original project title, ‘The Lightbox,’ which was chosen because of its abundant natural daytime light and glowing appearance when illuminated at night.
Erected over Kristin’s existing netball courts, Tūrama’s simple design enables all-weather sports and physical education. Its innovative structure features a durable steel frame clad in lightweight fibreglass to protect against wind and rain, complemented by acoustic panelling for noise reduction. Six large door openings provide natural ventilation, eliminating the need for air conditioning. In line with Kristin's commitment to sustainability, the facility also incorporates solar panels and a rainwater tank system to capture roof water for reuse on Kristin’s grounds.
While initially built as a dedicated sports venue, Tūrama has evolved into a vibrant, multi-purpose space, periodically hosting large school assemblies, community events and major milestone celebrations, including the school’s 50th Jubilee in 2023.
